New Beginnings-Days of Dreams Come True
I'm still preparing for Dallas. I'm doing lots of stuff, but mainly I'm thinking about Dreams Come True. Dallas is where dream-come-true will happen to some writers. To many writers, perhaps. Agents and editors will ask them to send partials or full manuscripts. Eventually, some of those writers will sell their books. And that is one way of living a dream come true.
But selling your novel (or achieving whatever your lofty goal might be) isn't the only way to live your dream.
Have you ever considered that you never know what's just around the corner? You have to turn that corner before you know what's there. You have to do something--turn that corner--before you get the payoff. Maybe you even have to take a risk. For a writer, you have to take the risk of having your masterpiece rejected.
I’ve always been struck by this idea--of looking forward to what’s just around the corner. Lots of my dreams have come true. Some biggies, and some little. Some I saw coming because I'd worked hard for them, but even so, there was always a point in time when I couldn't see around that corner, and had no idea what would come to pass.
And, so it will be in Dallas. I'm preparing my pitches, assembling what I'll take, arranging things at home so things will run smoothly while I'm gone. Dallas is just around the corner, and I don't know what Dallas will bring. But I'm doing all I can--right now--to make Dallas a productive experience. Whatever happens, I know the RWA National Conference will be a wonderful learning and social experience.
What I've just said reflects my personal philosophy. Today I had the pleasure of putting on my website a statement of that. If you check out the Dreams Come True section of my website, you'll see my basic approach to pursuing dreams. I think there's more to this than meets the eye. Attitude counts, I'm sure of it.
Tomorrow is Independence Day. As you get together with family and friends, enjoy your barbecue, take your mini-vacation, or just relax in a hammock with a cool drink, think of our Founding Fathers. When they started the movement for independence, they had no idea how it would turn out. And look at our fantastic country.
Happy Independence Day!
